What Do You Get Your Boss on Boss Day?

Friday, September 29, 2006

On October 26, 2006, it will be "Boss Day" once again.
It will be a day when over 50 million professional workers will forget completely that it is Boss Day. 40 million of them have no clue that there is a day called Boss Day.

Amazingly, I went through 15 years of my management career before discovering this special day. I am not even sure when it started. I really don't care - you shouldn't either.

Boss Day is a Hallmark holiday: nothing more, nothing less. It is a contrived holiday that leverages the relationship between you and your boss for corporate profit. Why pick one day each year to celebrate this painful daily experience?

Actually it is called "National Boss Day" - it is always on October 16. This year it is on a Monday.

Wow! I know I am excited.

I know the people who read my blog regularly will say something to me on Boss Day. They will say "Hey I read your blog on Boss Day and loved it. I am glad you think it is as stupid as I do."

Will anyone say "Happy Boss Day?"

Will I get a card?

Do I even want one?

No.

National Boss Day is not a holiday that the Blogging Boss celebrates. I think it is stupid. It is worse than Mother's Day and Father's day. Don't get me wrong. I think honoring your mother and father is very important. I just think it should be something you do all year, not just once a year on a Sunday. Rather than stuffing your mother in the car, taking her out to Cracker Barrel, and saying a lot of things you wouldn't normally say, spare yourself from the agony.

Get the point? We have invented what I call "Hallmark" holidays. These are days we do things that we would not normally do. These are days that we always forget about. These are holidays that cause us to rifle through the card section at the Hallmark store along with a hundred other people under the spell called "obligation."

I am a father of four children. I have asked them to celebrate Father's Day 365 days a year. This requires no cards, trips to a restaurant, or boring days spent with all the relatives.

If you vehemently disagree with me, read on. I have some things you can give your boss on National Boss Day 2006! If you do give your boss a card or a gift on this infamous day, be sure and remind him why you are doing it. He either doesn't know there is such a "day" or has completely forgotten about it like the rest of us.

Here are some things I think are worth giving:

1. A Virtual Yes Man

2. A Book called "How to Claw Your Way to the Top"

3. The Office Space Kit

4. Executive Decision Maker

If you want to give me something, I would like the:

Deluxe Wine Essentials Red Wine Set Wine Collection Gift

Now this is a gift that could make me celebrate Boss Day!

How To Tell Your Boss That You are NOT Happy

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

If you read my post on Dave's boss (the creature) and found yourself commiserating with him, you are probably not happy.

How do you tell your boss you are unhappy?

You are unhappy for one of two reasons. You either do not like your job (company, environment, workload, etc.) or you do not like your boss.

If you like your boss and not your job, you should tell your boss how you feel. There is a caveat to that advice. If your boss is unpredictable, yet you still like him, proceed with caution. You need to look for common patterns of behavior. You are looking for a pattern of behavior where your boss is receptive. If you discover this pattern, wait until he is receptive and go in his office and tell the truth.

Don't get all emotional and do not cry. I hate when people cry after they close my office door. There have been times where I have made people cry. They probably needed to cry and certainly needed to find a new job. I am digressing.

If you have a good relationship with your boss and he is a solid leader and mentor, go talk to him. He wants to hear that you are unhappy. He wants to do something about it. If you are a valuable employee, he wants to do what he can to keep you. He likes you! Seriously. Many people do not believe that their boss might actually appreciate them.

Now you need to be honest with yourself and figure out if you are perceived as a good employee or not. I didn't say if you "were" a good employee, rather if you are perceived as one. There is a huge difference. It will affect your outcome significantly. If you do not know, find a co-worker who you know will be totally honest with you and ask the question.

If your unhappiness primarily stems from your relationship with your boss, then you have a tougher road to travel. Take a deep breath and release. Get all of the ugly thoughts out of your mind. Cleanse your mind and pretend he is a human being. (Even if there is no empirical evidence)

If you can think rationally about this boss you dislike so much, consider how he would react should you be honest with him.

There are two questions you need to ask yourself:

1. Is there a reasonably good chance that he might listen?

2. Is there even a remote chance that he will respond?

If the answer to #1 and #2 is NO, you need to find a new job. It ain't gonna get better. Sorry to be so blunt, but the longer you stay the uglier the thoughts will get. This is not good for your health or your career.

If the answer to either #1 or #2 is YES, go out on the edge. Make sure you have your resume updated, but go tell him why you find it difficult to work with him. If you talk to him and you are honest, you will get your answer. He is either somewhat malleable or he will continue to be the impossible creature you have worked with all these years.

The worst thing you can do is to take no action. You need to do something to change your situation. You owe it to yourself.

Dave's Boss

Sunday, September 24, 2006

After reading Dave's blog, Weezil Breezes, I was inspired to use his boss as an example. No one, not even Dave should have to work for a guy like this.

Dave is a talented writer, devoted husband and father and a naturally funny guy. Here is his post with a few my annotations.

**********************************
Unreasonable: Adj. CheezWeezil's boss

Let me set the scene for you. CheezWeezil has already spent the bulk of the day eye-ball deep in work goo, skipping half of lunch to get stuff done.

BB: (Employee has too much on his plate. Must skip half of lunch. Probably a regular occurence.)

Senor Boss creature arrives at 4:40 and asks me if a political candidate has given the information we need for his website.

BB: (Great time of the day to be asking questions like that.)

"uh... no."

He leaves my office.

A minute later he is back and he tells me that we will be building a website and it needs to be up in the next few minutes, because the client is trying to see it.

"Oh, really?" CheezWeezil says. "Do you have any content for me?"

"They are saving it for you."

Then he shows me the mailer that the new site is to be patterned from.

A few minutes later he hands me his cell phone. It is the client. The boss tells me to ask for whatever I need to get the site up. By the way, he has already told the client that we have the site done, and all we need is this info to get it launched. He told them that before I had even heard I would be building the website. SHEESH!

BB: (Boss doesn't care about his employee. His employee exists to make him successful. There is no need to be considerate or communicate. The universe revolves around the boss.)

I set to work with no content, and a very vague description of what was wanted for the site. About 20 minutes later, I am still waiting for images, but have a format setup. Finally some images arrive, but wonder of wonders, they aren't the ones I need.

BB: (Boss will continue to expect employee to meet the unreasonable demands, no matter how ludicrous they get.)

Another ten minutes passes until I finally get the right images. I go into hyper-drive and slam out 3 pages based on the mailer I was shown.

At about 5:20 I was wrapping up, and the boss walked by. I called him in to look at what I had.

"That's all you have?" he asked. "We've been telling him what great things we can do. That's not very great."

BB: (After being insensitive, mouthing off demands like a monarch, not delivering on promised material, this boss now proceeds to insult his employee)

"And I haven't had very much time to work on it either." I replied.

BB: (Employee responds appropriately. Fires back at the ridiculous claim that the employee's work wasn't that good.)

I flipped through the pages.

He had me add another panel from the mailer which took about 10 minutes. I uploaded that and went home fuming.

BB: (Boss is unhappy, employee is unhappy. Another day in hell working for Dave's boss.)

***********************

Wouldn't you like to work for Dave's boss?

Do you work for Dave's boss?

Do You See The Elephant in the Room That No One Sees?

Thursday, September 21, 2006

The title was inspired by a David Maister quote on his blog, "Passion, People, and Principles." David is an internationally known author, teacher, consultant who challenges me almost every week. Most guys like David are so puffed up and busy feeding their ego that they could never be as transparent and vulnerable as he is. I love his passion, the depth of his thinking - his ability to challenge leaders.

David's quote was this:

"I have a bit of a reputation as the type of consultant, speaker and writer who talks about the elephant in the room that no-one else wants to talk about."

So David loses business, turns down business, and gets frustrated by the insanity in the world of business. I admire someone who sees the real problem and refuses to ignore it, despite the fact that they are alone. As David is reevaluating his business strategy, he called out for help on his blog. Last count, he had close to 60 responses. The responses are insightful, intelligent, thought provoking... There is more to glean from that one post than in most leadership classes I have suffered through.

If you have a passion for quality leadership and want to dig deep, I encourage you to read his post here.

Do you find yourself wanting to talk about the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about? It drives me crazy. How many times have you sat in a meeting where the elephant is sitting on the conference table staring at all of you, yet after two hours, he is never even acknowledged. Everyone is tryng to find a solution that does not require dealing with the elephant. In other words, we try to find a solution that does not address the real problem.

If we cannot face the real problem, then we live in a delusional state. It reminds me of movie, "Office Space" that I mentioned a few weeks ago. Even though I thought they could have done so much more with that movie, it did convey the delusional mindset of the corporation. Most of you have heard this tremendous quote:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. -Albert Einstein

Fifty years later, we are still corporately insane.

The challenge is that we need to get to the point where anyone in an organization is willing to yell "there's an elephant in the room!" It doesn't matter if you are the clerk, the administrative assistant, the VP, the software developer or the CEO.

Is it impossible? Maybe. Is it possible?

I'd like to raise the bar and challenge all of us to work towards creating an atmosphere where it is possible. I am not talking about the whole organization, rather the place where you have influence. It might be your department, your division, your office or your company.

Men at Work?

Monday, September 18, 2006

My wife and I had a wonderful time Saturday night. We usually have a great time when we go out, but this date was unique.

The day before, I decided it was time to get my hair cut. Penny has cut my hair for fifteen years. She is almost like family. We also share an 80s music obsession, so we started our "hey-do-you-remember-that-band?" ritual.

"I was thinking about your wife" she said. "Colin Hay from Men At Work is playing at the Australian festival on Saturday."

"Men At Work, Colin Hay?" I said. "Penny, that is Jill's favorite band."

"Yeah I know, I think you can still get tickets." she said.

I was thrilled. I could hear Jill singing "Down Under" and "Who Can it Be Now."

This wildly popular band of three or four hits broke up over twenty years ago. I didn't even know that Colin Hay was still singing and Men At Work had some reunion concerts.

I got tickets that afternoon. Actually, I was the first one at the booth. The festival had not started yet and it took several people to get me to the guy with tickets. Ten bucks a piece! What a deal.

Later that evening, Jill and I were eating at our local Irish pub and I told her the news. I felt like one of the kids who had found the golden ticket in a Wonka chocolate bar. I was so excited to take Jill to hear her favorites songs performed live by the man himself. She had never seen them "live" back in the 80s.

On Saturday evening we went to the outdoor concert. It was a small venue; an intimate setting. Singing along with songs propelled us right back to High School and College. At the end of the concert we had made our way to the edge of the stage. We were in spitting distance of Colin as we danced and sang along to the song "Down Under." You remember, "Vegemite sandwiches."

It was magical.

We experienced something that was so special and meaningful to both of us.

During the concert, I started to think about Colin Hay. He was now almost a quarter of a century older. These songs are a huge part of his life. No matter what he has done, these wildly popular songs follow him like a shadow. I wondered if he actually hated them now. I think I might. But then, the royalty checks would probably cure that for me.

At one point he rebuked the audience. He said that the 80s were a great time, but we had to move on (not his exact words). Someone form the audience bellowed out, "Why?"

Obviously this guy was stuck, still living in the 80s. Then I started to think about the workforce today. I started to think about my career. Am I stuck or did I move on? Am I too comfortable, or am I on the edge?

Are you stuck? Are you carrying around your accomplishments like a trophy?

Unlike Colin Hay, one of the most successful Australian singers, we do not have to carry our greatest hits around with us. The music business is not very forgiving. It is not always possible to continue building on your success. Those of us in other professions have the opportunity to take our success and build upon it.

David Lorenzo Takes ACTION!

Conquer Fear, Take Action!

Friday, September 15, 2006

People who talk about doing something, yet take no action end up frustrated. They have a tremendous idea, it germinates, and is fertilized a little bit. In the end; it dies. Why did it die? The "art" of taking action was probably not understood. To build a successful business you must learn to take action. It is really a simple concept; however, it is not easy to accomplish.

Fear is the biggest enemy. Fear paralyzes so many people. It robs them from the success they should be enjoying. It is much easier to "play it safe" and not take the next step. Taking the next step requires action and the willingness to accept failure. Failing to take action day after day will ensure that the business will not succeed.

I learned the hard way. I thought success was inevitable - if I only took the initial step. Once I beat the insecurities that lurked around the monster, fear, I took action. I fully expected success to follow.

It eluded me.

I became frustrated and stopped taking any more steps forward. I became paralyzed now by a feeling of failure.

Why would I expect that taking the first step would ensure success? Nobody ever taught me that. Did anyone ever really teach me that "slow and steady wins the race?" Well, yeah they did, but I wasn't really listening.

I didn't understand what taking action really meant. I didn't understand that it required diligence and patience. I did not embrace incremental progress.

My mental model was centered around taking the first big step forward. Then, I would sit back and watch the rest fall into place. I thought that I had to do everything at the front end of building a business. If I did everything possible right away, I was building a foundation that would support my entire business.

I failed. I started to blame everyone and everything for the failure to launch my first internet business. I started to discount the wisdom that was imparted to me by my mentors. I would lament to my wife - "everything I try to do fails." Even though I had run a profitable consultancy for four years, my success was dwarfed by the failure to start an internet business.

I began to hear some of my mentors talk about taking action - one step at a time. They explained how they would write on an index card one thing that they were going to do to improve their internet business. Then each day they did what was written on the card.

Doesn't this sound simple?

Actually it is. It has taken me some time to really take this advice to heart, but over time I finally started to believe it. Why?

I started to do it. No matter if I saw any results from what I did; I began to take action everyday.

I actually took this giant leap after applying a concept that I had learned outside of the walls of internet space. I knew that to sustain growth and experience success, I had to "hard-wire" taking action right into every part of my life. It had to be as natural as breathing. It had to be as consistent as a beating heart. By taking action day after day, even if it was as simple as writing an article, I was beginning to make it part of my life.

I go to the gym 4 days a week. I have guys that hold me accountable. If I don't feel like "working out" on any given day, I get an email from one of my buddies asking me when I am headed to the gym. I immediately change my direction and respond. Hours later I am bench pressing, building strength in my shoulders, arms and key muscle groups. I know I need muscle strength to help keep my body healthy. Muscles keep your joints working well, support your back and slow the aging process, including arthritis.

That is my model. I obviously assigned value to working out and keeping fit. Why shouldn't I do this in my internet business?

The daily act of taking action is moving me faster and faster towards success.

Is it time that you hard-wire action into your life?

You will not regret making the change.

Take Action

Thursday, September 14, 2006

If you haven't done so already, check out the BigSeminar 8! If you are interested in starting an internet business or making an existing one much more profitable, this conference is for you! I am kicking in $500 towards the cost, if you sign up through this link. Check it out here.

***********************

When I started my first business four years ago, it required action on my part. My business partner and I decided to put into action something we had talked about doing for almost two years. Can you believe it took us two years? Imagine if we have started a month after the idea was birthed?

The problem for so many of us is that we are "action adverse." That is my phrase, by the way. It is easier not to take action or do anything. It is much harder to take one step forward. People get great business ideas everyday. Do the businesses thrive and succeed? No. Most of them never even get incorporated.

The idea comes and goes. No action is taken. Why is that?

What I have learned is that fear is the biggest enemy to action. People get a great idea and then talk themselves out of doing anything with it.

"I don't have the money to start the business."

"I know this, but not this."

"Someone else is probably already doing the same thing."

"I don't know how to start."

"This will never work."

Ever hear those things in your head? I have. Many times.

I loved the quote I found yesterday from an anonymous author:

"Everyday brings endless opportunities to succeed, so why should I fear?"

Isn't this true?

There are more opportunities out there everyday that we could go after, yet we succumb to the four letter word that kills more success than any other word I know.

FEAR

What are we afraid of? You have probably heard that it took Walt Disney 29 times to sell his idea for Disneyland. Did you know that Colonel Sanders, the chicken guy in his 70s, went all around the country visiting over 600 restaurants? He was trying to sell his chicken recipe.

That is action. Everyday, these men took action.

Tomorrow I will talk about how I am learning to take action and hard-wire it into my day.

Leave Your Work at Work and Go Home

*** For those of you who lost loved ones or friends in the tragic events during 9-11, I hope that you find peace today as we mark the fifth anniversary. My thoughts are with all the people who lived through a day that changed their lives so profoundly. ***

I am picking up where I left yesterday. I think the timing of this post is significant.

I had to make a decision. For me it was prompted by a very personal experience. Almost four years ago, my best friend from High School died while playing the sport he loved, ice hockey. His death was very sudden and tragic. Three weeks before he died I had visited him in the town where we grew up. He lived 800 miles from me.

I was traveling up to the town to go to my Dad's 65th birthday and I called my friend, Craig. I asked if he was free Friday evening to have a few beers and catch up. He was healthy as a horse, physically fit, and the same great guy I knew from my school days. We had many laughs.

Three weeks later, I was driving back up to the same town to attend his funeral. He was gone. It rocked my world. To lose a friend at the age of 39 is something that is hard to reconcile. I no longer saw my life the same way. I especially became resentful of all the hours I was spending traveling with my job. I realized that I was letting my job control my life. I was getting more angry and resentful by the day.

As a result of Craig's untimely departure from this world, my life changed. It took some time, but I eventually took control away from my job. I decided that my life was more important than my job and even the amount of money I made. Imagine that?

There is no trick here. In order to stop your job from ruling your life and robbing you of energy, health, and happiness, must make one decision. You must decide to stop the madness. You must say to yourself that your life is more important than your company. Your company is paying you to do a job. They are not paying you to give up your life. You must learn how to stop the worries of the day from replaying in your mind. Your drive or ride home must be "work-free."

Think of an upcoming vacation - sitting on the beach with the ocean breeze. Think about your son's last great soccer match. Think of riding your road bike on a cool autumn day. You must train your mind to think of those things that make you happy in life.

The rule is simple - you cannot think about negative work-related things the minute you walk out of the office door. If you catch yourself starting to think about that obnoxious guy that works in the cube next to you, stop. It takes some practice, but I assure you it can be done.

If you can't train yourself to leave your job behind, then you have two alternatives.

1) Look for a job that is less demanding or has less responsibility. You are obviously having difficulty handling the level of responsibility or the amount of work required. This is hard, because it may require a lifestyle change. You may need to take a significant cut in pay. Is your life worth that? Yes.

2) Get some professional help. It is okay to admit that you cannot control your emotions. Counseling has helped many people. Sometimes it helps to have a professional walk through the exercise of giving up your work stress and learning to live a more healthy and happy life. Is your life worth that? Yes.

If you take your job home and all the related stress, make a decision to stop right now. It took my friend Craig's death to make me really stop and evaluate my priorities in life. I kept thinking about how he wasn't going on that Caribbean vacation with his wife. He was really looking forward to it.

He wasn't going to hold his grandchild.
He wasn't going to see his son graduate from college.

I wrestled with this for over a year.

Then, I finally got it! I realized I still had a chance.

You do too.

Stress at Work, Stress at Home

Sunday, September 10, 2006

Want to learn more about making income on the internet? Check out the Bigeminar 8. It is one of the best events I have attended. Go check it out now by clicking here.

******************************************

I hear it everyday. "I am so stressed, things are piling up." You can see the worry in their eyes. Their entire body is being affected by the negative chemical reactions caused by stress.

I do not have to get clinical or quote studies. We all have read enough about what stress does to our bodies. Stress, eating too much, eating the wrong things, and no exercise describes the average American worker.

It is true. Most people do not get enough exercise, do not eat right, and carry way too much stress around. It is a crisis in corporate America. Some companies have recognized that they need to do something to help their employees get fit physically and emotionally.

If you work for a company that offers incentives to work out in the gym, or attend exercise programs, teaches classes in nutrition or stress management, take advantage of them. It is so important.

Even if you have no programs at your company, there are some things you can do to combat stress at work. It was years before I realized that stress did not have to get the best of me. Year after year, I drove home thinking about everything I didn't get done. Often, I would not even remember the ride home. How pathetic is that? I was so focused on the negative..

Are you stressed? Do you take work home with you and let it rule your evening? Does your wife or husband ask if you are even home? Have you checked out into a world of rapid heartbeats, high blood pressure, and gastrointestinal problems?

You are not alone. You can stop the madness. I refuse to do it anymore. You can too. Tomorrow I will tell you about how it took a sudden and tragic loss of a great friend to wake me up.

Investing in Yourself

Saturday, September 09, 2006

If you have not clicked on the link to the BigSeminar site, go check it out now by clicking here. If you have any interest at all in earning an income from an internet business, you need to attend this seminar. I am offering to pay part of your way ($500), but only the first four people who click on this link, sign up for the Bigseminar, and send me their confirmation.

I would like to help motivate some of you that are on the edge. You want to get your feet wet, but you are having trouble taking that next step. Take a few minutes and check this out. The speakers at this conference are some of the top internet marketers in the world.

Ok - on with today's post.

Do you invest in yourself every year? I am talking about spending money on yourself to help your career. Whether you work for a good company or own a business, you need to invest in yourself. Entrepreneurs usually have this concept hard-wired into their overall budget. A successful business always needs some initial investment to get things started. Successful business owners develop the right mindset early on.

What about those of us who work for a company and want to develop a successful career? We need to develop the same mindset.

Investing in your career means spending money. Sometimes it means spending your own money. Other times your company spends money on you. If your company offers training money and you do not use it, you are losing out on the opportunity to make yourself more valuable to your company. If you are more valuable, you are worth more in dollars. It is really a simple concept.

Smart companies know they have to invest in the people in their organization. A business’s biggest asset is its people. Don't you want to be one of the valuable assets? I know I do.

If your company is willing to pay for training, find a conference or a class that you know will boost your career and attend it. Find some kind of training that will give you the best return on your investment. The most important thing is that you do it.

Even if your company does not pay for training, you still need to do it. That means spending a couple thousand dollars of your own cash on your career. Put the money aside a year in advance so it does not feel like a financial burden.

If you are developing an additional stream of income, as I am doing this year, then invest in something like the BigSeminar. Find something that will help you get to the next level with whatever you are doing to generate extra revenue for your family. Take action and do it.

Enjoy your weekend!

Your First Step Towards Financial Freedom - BigSeminar 8

Friday, September 08, 2006

OK, this is where the rubber hits the road. Are you really serious about an internet business?

What is the BigSeminar 8? The BigSeminar was the defining event for me. After attending a BigSeminar, I realized that there was a marketplace out in the world we call the internet that was much bigger than I ever imagined.

John Reese shared his experience. He made a million dollars in just 24 hours. It is true and it is documented. This is not hype, this is not fiction. This guy spent 15 years studying the internet. It paid off!

This year's conference is going to be the best yet! If you really want to break out and understand the full potential of the internet, go sign up for the conference right now. Click here to find out more AND sign up as my guest. I am an alumni of the BigSeminar. I can attend for half the price OR I can bring guests. What is more important to me is that YOU get to go to the conference. So, I am willing to give up my discount to give you a better deal.

Only people who are serious about changing their lives.

If you sign up and attend the BigSeminar 8, I am willing to give you $500.00 cash when I meet you there. The first time I went to this seminar, Alex Mandossian paid for my hotel room and invited me to attend a cocktail party where I could meet all of the marketing gurus in person. I met Armand Morin, Alex, and many other nationally known marketers. The event changed my life. I now know the huge potential that lies dormant in what we know as the "web."

If I get just two other people to attend the seminar, I will talk to Armand and Alex about getting in on their "special events." This is not a hard sell- it is something that YOU need to do if you are serious about making money on the interenet.

Click here and learn a whole lot more. If you sign up, send me an email and let me know. I will have $500 cash ready for you at the show. You can use it to pay for you room, or your airfare, or your mileage, whatever...

I will meet you in person and gladly hand over $500 cash. It is a way for me to give something back. I want to give you cash for you to spend on whatever will make it easier for YOU to attend!

In order to really succeed on the internet and/or in your home-based business, you need to attend this conference. I would not say this if I did not believe it!

I will talk more tomorrow about some conference calls you need to attend. They will help you learn more about what is going to happen to you in Atlanta!

The dates are: October 27, 28 and 29. Go learn more about the event I think changes more lives than any other event.

Remember, sign up and email me.

Eric

Building an Internet Business and Passive Income

Wednesday, September 06, 2006

I have received emails from some of you asking about internet business opportunities. I believe that the internet is an almost infinite source of opportunities. Through your PC, you have access to the entire world marketplace.

Don't get me wrong; it is a very competitive place out there. There is a lot to learn before you build a successful internet business. Fortunately, there is a wealth of information available. However, it is not free. The people who are making an incredible income on the internet have spent years discovering how to market and sell.

I am in the process of building my online business. Of everything I have learned; two things have impacted me the most:

1. You must own a business about which you are passionate.

2. You must be patient as you learn. Success rarely happens overnight.

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I would be sharing some of what I have learned about internet or home-based businesses. Some of you asked for a list. I do not have a list of start-up businesses that I can endorse. You may "google" for them; however, you will find a lot of scams.

I want to share with you the internet marketers from whom I have learned the most. Some of them I have met personally. I also want to reveal what I think is some of the best source material for interent marketing.

I am not trying to quit my job and make a million dollars in a month. I am trying to build an internet business that will provide passive income. Passive income is money that you can earn without a lot of direct involvement. You can create businesses on the internet that make you money while you sleep.

For example, the Google Adsense program is a great way to earn passive income. Go to the Google website to find out more about this. Those of us who are publishers of information use Adsense to earn money. People are landing on my blog 24 hours a day. I make money as they read my posts and articles.

I am not interested in creating an Adsense empire - that's not my passion. However, I do make enough money from Adsense to pay my bills to support this blog and other websites that I maintain.

Imagine if you had 5 or even 10 sources of passive income. It would add up, wouldn't it?

Here is my first tip:

Subscribe to WebProNews. You can google it and sign up to receive the daily emails. I find them very helpful.

Tomorrow I will talk about another source you should use.

I Need an Apple MacBook Pro

Saturday, September 02, 2006

For almost a year, it has been building up inside of me. I am talking about Mac fever or perhaps better stated - MacBook Pro envy. I see those magnificent wide screens, sleek white casings and my previous obsession for iPods seems to pale in comparison. Move over iPod Nanos, the MacBook Pro has my affection now.

I have a laptop, but it does not have a white apple that lights up on the cover. It has a dull logo, which only reinforces to all those around me with Apple laptops that I do not have the right tool. I took an Apple logo sticker that came with my iPod and slapped it right over laptop's pathetic logo. Only those who get close enough know that it is an imposter.

I get the occasional stare from Mac owners trying to figure out why my Apple laptop has a black battery bar in the front and is the wrong color. It is also too fat. Others come up to me and ask me how I like my Mac. For one brief moment in time I live in the same world with all the other MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. Then I am quickly return to reality and explain that it is not an Apple.

Despite some great laughs over my Apple sticker, I remain unsatisfied. I feel empty. My keyboard is too narrow. My battery bar in the front is annoying. The "Designed for Windows XP" sticker on the front of my laptop only serves to remind me that I am running a technically challenged operating system. It is not running the Apple OS. Ugh...

The worst experience for me is when I enter a cafe with wifi and see everyone, yes EVERYONE typing on their MacBooks. Some are showing others beautiful pictures on the awesome screen. Some are listening to music on their Nano, typing away on their titanium white MacBook Pro. The Nano iPod matches the laptop and it all comes together complete with the white earbuds.

Then I had an epiphany. It hit me as I was writing this post. I spend a lot of time sharing my knowledge and giving advice about careers. I do not have any products to sell yet. I have a book idea formulating, and some other ideas, but my blog is really a free resource. Despite what you hear about people making ten thousand dollars using Adsense, let me assure you that is not the average experience. The money I make barely pays for my website fees and domain renewals.

So what was my epiphany?

What if my readers help me get the right tool for my job? What if my readers could spare a few bucks or more and make a donation to the Blogging Boss? So starting today, at the top of my site you will see a Donate button. If you have been helped by my advice or are a regular reader, click on the button and make a donation.

(one more thing to add)

As I sat in the local cafe writing this post, I just noticed a guy sitting down at the table next to mine. What was on his table? A beautiful silver MacBook Pro with the white Apple fully lit! Seriously.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend.
