looking for work just for fun

Saturday, December 03, 2005

I just came across this post on a forum I participate in regularly. Is this for real? Most people that post on this forum are extremely frustrated about job interviews not going well, or not hearing from hiring managers to being out of work for too long and being scared.

"I come from a wealthy family and haven't worked at all since I graduated college in 2001. Ever since I graduated college I mainly pursued my own interests and traveled, been to Greece, Japan, Italy, among others. I am tired of having too much free time and having my days just go by. I just want to bring a small contribution to the world and bring some meaning to my life. Anyone have recommendations about someone in my situation? I am not looking for something too professional and demanding. What kind of work could you have so much fun at that it almost could be considered a hobby?"

Well, I would recommend politics. It meets the following criteria listed:

1. Wealthy
2. Likes to travel
3. Pursues own interests
4. Wants to bring a SMALL contribution to the world
5. Not looking for something professional
6. Not looking for something demanding
7. Looking for something almost like a hobby

I am sorry but I can't relate to this at any level.

Unfortunately, there are too many clowns like that in the workforce... They figure that once they get hnired, the hard part is over, they just wait in line all week for the paychecks to come out.

Slackers in the workplace really tork me off.

If there is nothing to do, I always either make something to do, or research aspects of my job to improve my skills.

I cant just sit and expect to be paid an honest wage.

Well, some people are that fortunate to 'work for fun'. I am not one of them . Although I do like the place I work at.:)

Me, Me, Me. This is all about ME. I want ......

Oh, you mean I'm supposed to contribute something?

I don't get paid for just being me.

Po' thang.

Sit around and look pretty and maybe you can be Paris Hilton one day :)

Wow, that's an eerily accurate description of a career in politics. You're right, it would be perfect for this twit. Or maybe he/she could join the army. Yeah, travel to exotic lands, meet interesting people, all on the government's dime. Hmmm....The possiblilities are endless. ;-)

Actually, even politics requires considerable effort. We may not respect our politicians, but it would be a mistake to think that they don't work hard - they do.

I know any number of people who do not have to work, either through family money or by virtue of accruing wealth on their own. But, these people do continue to work.

The difference is that they have the freedom to pursue work that relates to some element of self-fulfilment or and/or service to the community - whether that is charitable work, religious work, artistic endeavors, etc.

In one example a friend of mine founded a performing arts organization that has grown immensely over the past 10 years. He is respected in the arts community and has created something that has made a positive impact on the lives of many people - both performers and audiences alike. This organization also employs several people full-time.

If my friend did not have the financial freedom to pursue this project, it probably would have never been created - to the detriment of many.

Though it is a bit off-putting to think of trust funders as contributors to our society, the fact is that we actually do need people who are not strictly constrained by the need to make a living, provided those people feel some sense of obligation to put their good fortune to use in society's service.

The folks that I know who are in this position are some of the hardest working people you could ever meet.

How about volunteering jack@$$. You know, like be a mentor. Oooh, except we probably don't want you to pass your self centered view of the world on to anyone else.
Sheesh.

beth, funny you mention Paris Hilton. Someone on the forum responded with the same comment.

Lonnie, you have a great idea there. Blog titles:

My absorbed Little Life
Too Rich Too Work
Fun Guy

Ananke, you hit it on the head as usual. Enjoy your cynicism. ;)

Miguel, you are so very right. I would go a step furhter and say those who have the means have a greater responsibility to contribute something to this world.

Actually, I think he should move to Cape Cod and buy a little gift store and coffee shop and run it into the ground.

That's what happens to all the others!
