A "Thank You" NoteTuesday, November 29, 2005![]() Recently someone posted this to a job forum: "I just had a really good one-hour interview with the hiring manager, and I'd like to send a thank-you note. Problem is, I don't know her mailing address. I know the street address, floor, and her full name and title, so do you think that's enough for the internal mailing system to get a letter to her? I also have her email address and could email the thank you, but I thought paper would be more formal." My response was irreverent at best. I responded: "I know this goes against what many "experts" say, but after interviewing hundreds of people, the "thank you" note is cliche. If I want to hire someone after a great interview, I hire him/her. Period. A thank you note does not make any difference. OK, going out on a limb here. Any hiring manager that makes a decision based on a thank you note is not convinced that s/he has the right person for the job. If your interview was really good, then it was really good for the hiring manager as well." That is my real experience. Don't do things that really do not make sense. Get some sleep Homer!
Really like you new header Eric :)
I have hired a lot of people in my life and all decisions were made before a thank you note would have had a chance to be mailed. Good advice.

Here's a chance to expound...
What if you are a hard worker, but stink at job interviews?
Not asking if in that case a note should be sent, just for your thoughts.
yeah i have to think a good HR person would not hire on the basis of a thank you note. on the other hand, that doesn't negate the politeness of the gesture of sending it in the first place, does it?
