I'm Stunned By This Tragedy

Steve Irwin, beloved and wacky crocodile hugger, was killed in a freak accident.

Read about it here.

My admiration for this man, who lived his passion to a degree not often seen, is matched by the depth of my sorrow for this loss. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

I can't believe he's gone.

It shouldn't have happened. The man has wrestled crocodiles and mingled with venom-spitting snakes. He's handled all manner of fascinating-yet-dangerous animals, yet his death was brought about by one of the most docile creatures in the sea.

Ironic, yes. And deeply tragic.

I'm very sad today.

Yes, I saw it online this morning. Tom was in a state of disbelief. He was in one of the Wiggles dvd's and Ida and Tom just loved him.

I hadn't heard about it until I read your post. It bummed me out for awhile.

I was doing some writing, but that flattened my tires.

We loved the crocodile hunter. I too have been sad today. I hope that his wife and children are able to find some peace. He lived extremely, but to the fullest indeed.

A lot of the kids I work with were saddened by this also. If you have a sec come by our blog and give them a shout!

I was so amazed to read this Jill, thanks for making me feel normal yet again. I've felt a little shell-shocked since hearing about it yesterday morning, but I admit I felt sheepish about being so affected by it.
It is a loss though, Steve-o was quite the hero in our house. I'm not one to applaud the current trend toward "extreme" stunts but I never felt he was taking stupid risks with the animals he encountered, it was always very obvious he knew what he was doing. The freakishness of his death is so hard to absorb.
I admired his dedication and his enthusiasm and I loved how his wife was always right there with him, how they shared the passion for their work, concerned for each other's safety but never stiflingly so.
He will be missed terribly.

I agree with you. I'm sad for his family, but at least he was doing what he loved when he died. I didn't realize until this that he'd grown up with a zoo his parents owned. I'm sure his kids will carry on the tradition.

Thank you for sharing your feelings regarding Steve. We are big fans here in the "armpit" as well. He was an inspiration to all of us. The enthusiasm and admiration he had toward nature was a pleasure to watch and to learn from! What chokes me up is looking back at the love in his eyes when he was with Terri and his children. What a great loss.

God Bless his family

Very sad indeed. When I heard about it, I thought that he might have been killed by a crock...
