Organization 101

No, I didn't make the sign; nor did I put the basket there.

Can you guess which one of my children did this?

Wonders never cease, I suppose. I mean, ours is one of the most divergent households you could set foot in. Normally the "holding it all together and actually checking to see what time it is" falls to me. But when it comes to returning library books...well, I fall piteously short.

Actually, I hate library books. They smell bad and they have to be returned, for goodness sake!

Last week I took all four chickens to the Friends of the Library Annual Used Book Sale at our local branch. The selection was as poor as I'd expected it to be, but you never know when you might unearth a treasure at one of these things, right? So I persisted in perusing the rows of castoff books.

Spencer was not impressed. After we'd been there for, oh, five minutes or so, he announced in a particularly loud voice, "I like Borders better."

Well, yeah, so do I! But I didn't really want to broadcast that to the poor Friends of the Library volunteers sitting at the "pay here" table.

We ended up hitting the library shelves instead; hence, the Golden Library Basket in our second floor hallway.

Just a bit of a blog diversion while I continue to wrap up Chapter 26.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your wonderful, encouraging comments (and cheers!!). All of my comments come directly to my inbox, so it's been lovely receiving such a steady trickle of "warm happies" while I'm writing.

You're the best!

I am so bad about returning library books. They get lost and I find them ten years later. i have huge fines on all our cards. I just stopped checking them out and shop at a used bookstore now. It's a lot cheaper for me!

Getting library books is ok, i mean i always return them and stuff, but i never tell my mom i've checked them out because she gets all crazy about it. she gets all worried that i'll forget and makes me take them back a whole week early!

There was almost no money growing up for buying books, so the library was a wonderful place for me, free things to read! The only thing I hated was there used to be a 12 book per person limit. That would only last me a week or so!

But I really dislike the local library now. It's very dirty, for one thing, and for another they keep charging me fines. I've only ever taken anything back late twice, so it's a pain to have to call them and ask them to get somebody to go look for the book. They always find it, but I don't know how, since they seem to have illiterate blind cats shelving for them.

Write, Jill, write! You can do it! :)

Interesting.

Did anyone guess who did it then?

Several years ago (before the advent of DramaMama) my son James and I shoveled the snow for an elderly couple across the street. When we were finished, the older woman came out with a book for James. When we got it out later to read it, I opened the cover, and it had one of those library checkout pouches in it. :)

You are the only homeschooling mommy I've ever met who hates library books as much as I do! They always feel so... so slimy to me.

Because of this our Borders/Amazon/Alibris/eBay book tab runs more than our collective food and clothing bills each year. :-P

How ironic that you wrote this. Just the other day my girlfriend and I were perusing Chapters and I was humming and hawing (is that even a word?) over which book I should buy. She asked if I ever go to the Library?

No Way!!! I want a virgin book. I want to be able to open it up and hear the little creak, be able to drop spaghetti sauce on it if I want to. I also want to be able to hand it off to a friend and say 'this is a great book, you should read it'.

Well - I am glad that you are having a steady flow on writing :).
Regarding your question on top of the post "Who made the sign?" I think it is your oldest son, who just made a sign not that long ago for your office. :)

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one with Anti-Libraryitis!!

Iris...you're the only one who took a guess! Unfortunately, you didn't choose the right chicken. :)

My dear Maggie put the sign on the basket!

I used to like libraries... heck, I even had a Saturday job working at our local library when I was about 15...

But the last time I went to our local library was 9 months ago, when the librarian accused me of not returning a Mr Tickle book after I had returned it. She insisted I still had it even though I didn't & told me she would be charging me for its replacement. So I haven't been back. Like you say, they are slimy & germy, Alex has lots of books & if he wants/needs any more, I'll just buy them. I can do without that kind of hassle, thank you!

you know I remember back in the days whenit used to be the highlight to go to the library, especially in the summer when they would have the reading challanges on how many books you could read during the summers. ohh how I loved that. I reember our library having an audio section too where you could listen to actual vinyl records and even check them out! being able to take home an original vinyl record and taping it to a cassete. that was my very first tast and love of classical music. What has our library system come to that you can't take your children to story times or that you can't or feel as if you can't check out books without the repercussions of being accused that you didn't turn it back in... sad sad.
I do agree that I prefer going to borders/barne's and nobles, even have a few favorite half price bookstores and I like hitting the half price books that are new in some of the outlet centers near here. I fancy having a room in my house one day that is an actual library, a place where you can sit in front of a warm fire and read and listen to soft music and be able to bond with your family. And I do believe I'm starting one even though we have not the house or the room to put them in. hardbacks are my favorites but I will settle for a few paperbacks here and there. I must say that I am enjoying reading the posts and Iwillbe following them closely!

Annora, I'm glad you're enjoying the blog. Welcome! :)

I prefer hardbacks, too, but the cost almost always puts me off. Ahh, some day...
