So maybe that's a wee bit of an exaggeration. You see, yesterday morning I was minding my own business, slicing bagels over by the toaster. They were fresh bagels, of course, and the white, paper bag they had come in was sitting on the counter beside my workspace. Suddenly, without warning, dear Eric came over and plopped the tea kettle onto the nearest burner. He turned on the flame -- poof! -- which immediately ignited the paper bag. "Eric!" I shrieked. "Eric!" So, like any clear-thinking man would do, my resourceful husband began blowing on the burning bag and beating it with a butter knife. Yes, you read that correctly. Needless to say, his huffing and puffing fanned the flames, so that they grew bigger and brighter (and shed black ash all over the counter). "Eric!" I shrieked again. (Obviously I was having a bit of trouble communicating during this sudden crisis.) He picked up the burning bag (thus rescuing the bagel that had been trapped inside) and ran it to the sink, where he dropped it and doused it. A small piece of burning bag still remained on the counter, so I quickly picked it up and threw it in the sink as well. Crisis over. Except for the ridiculous mess it had caused (and guess who had to clean THAT up?). Naturally, the entire thing was quite amusing to our children, who were eating breakfast at the time. Jonathan was particularly tickled by his daddy's -- um -- valiant firefighting efforts. (I wonder if they train REAL firefighters in the blow-and-beat-with-a-butter-knife technique?) Who needs fiction? My life is an ongoing story of often unbelievable proportion. I'll bet you'll never want to come to my house for breakfast, will you? --- Jill Schafer Boehme MOMMY!
