Thursday, August 25, 2005Some of You Have Asked, But...I'm not telling! The title of my book, that is. It's one of those things that one keeps "under wraps" until the Big Sell. I'd love to whet your appetite, though. It's a Young Adult fantasy set in its own, idyllic world. There are two protagonists: a twelve-year-old girl and her fifteen-year-old brother. It is not a Harry Potter clone: There is not a single witch or warlock to be found. It is not a Tolkien clone: There is not a single elf, dwarf, goblin, or any other "alternative race that we've all read about a dozen times" to be found. Yet it is, indeed, a fantasy tale, embracing all that is "magical" about a time and place that can only exist in our minds. And, if one continues to think positively, on the silver screen. I am endlessly, measurelessly excited about it. And yes, I'm already hard at work on "Book Two." That's it in a nutshell, really. (And I promise there aren't any bad cliches like that in the book.) Thank you for asking. Oh, and it's not just for the young'uns. Two of my biggest fans (Beta readers, if you will) are adults. And no, Eric isn't one of them. (That is to say, he loves the story, but he's my husband, so how much credibility would that carry?) I promise to keep you updated as Things Begin to Happen. I'm also working on a list of "recommended reading," as requested by a reader. So stay tuned! |

14of my readers are feeling chatty:
Very cool preview. Are we talking days, weeks, or months before we can buy this book?
Hey Jill,
Thanks for the info on your book. It's great to hear an author so excited about her writing...Do you have a publisher?
Thanks for putting together a list of books. I can't wait to see it!
Kathie
My now eight year old son cannot wait to get his hands on a copy of the novel. He still asks me when it's going to be "ready".....
Good luck on your book!
May I say, Move over, JK?!?!?
LOLz!
Good for you. And while you are at it, I strongly encourage you to give Creative Commons a try. A little untraditional, but it is a great way of reaching out to readers.
Jill that was the best description i have read about your book so far! I love how you described it with out giving to much detail :-)
I'm heart broken that Miss Leeese has comment on your blog and not mine :-( :-) love yeah gf!
Months, and then some. Never fear, though -- I promise to keep you informed along the way.
Yes, Jonathan has read the 2nd Harry Potter book. That's the one with the flying car. Ugh.
Thanks, all, and thanks, Christopher, for the info on Creative Commons. I've skimmed the web site but I need to spend more time on it to understand it!
I know I'm late to this but I had to think about it. You see, I read it several days ago and thought, to my horror, that we were in direct competition. I, too, write fantasy but without the witches, dragons, elves, etc. Having thought about it, however, I've decided that it's good to have at least one other person in what I see as a new genre. My books are aimed more at an adult audience than yours anyway, I think. Wonderful to hear about your work, Jill, and I hope the book is a smash hit! :)
Wow, Gone Away, I'm always DELIGHTED to meet another fantasy writer!
Yes, my book is definitely geared for the Young Adult market, though, like Harry Potter, it has appeal for adults as well. If you don't intend upon publishing your book in the YA genre, though, then we are certainly not in "direct competition" with each other. Even if we were, there is certainly a "kinship" among authors of the same genre, regardless.
At any rate, thank you for your well wishes! You've roped me in as a reader of your blog, by the way, so I'm sure I'll be back there soon. ;)
Thank you for leaving out elves, dwarfs, & gobblins. I had my fill of those little guys, but what about trolls? You didn't mention the trolls.
The trolls are all online....aren't they?
Yep, too many elves-n-dwarves in the fantasy world, though I am admittedly a fan of Tolkien.
You're not a Borg, are you? :)
No *looks around nervously* it's a geometrical preference. I'm not part of the hive collective of unimatrix one.
Hmm. I will have to take your word for it. You did use the pronoun "I," after all...
You are very observant for a hew-man... typical writer.
