Tuesday, April 12, 2005My First Fan
Well, technically my daughter Maggie is my first "real" fan, but since she's related to me I can't really quote her and sound reliable, right? At any rate, this past weekend we had the wonderful experience of meeting friends for the first time "in real life." A woman I've known and loved for about three years online came with her husband and three children to spend the day with us on Saturday, while passing through Tennessee on their way home to Wisconsin. We had a blast! At any rate, it was time for them to hit the road, and the normal "bustle" of sending children to the potty and gathering personal belongings was going on. I was in the kitchen alone, when suddenly my friend's not-quite-8-year-old son approached me and said, "I want a copy of that book." "What book?" I asked. I seriously didn't know what he was talking about. "The fantasy book." Goodness me! I hadn't said a word about it during the visit -- clearly his mother had mentioned it to him earlier. "Ohhh," I said, kneeling down in order to speak to him at his own level. "Well, that's not quite ready yet. But when it's all done, I'll send you a copy. How does that sound?" He said, "Okay." Then, I put my arm around his little shoulders and whispered into his ear, "Do you like sword fights?" "Oh, YEAH!" came the reply. "Well, you'll like my story, then!" You know, I'm not going to forget to send this sweet boy a signed copy of my novel when it DOES finally arrive on the literary scene (assuming he won't be in his mid-30's by then). Sometimes it's the smallest things that really fill us up and keep us going, despite invisible editors, busy agents, and the black hole of wondering when my turn will REALLY come. I love kids, and I want them to read and to love my story. It's really just as simple as that. Till next time.... Labels: writing |
